Fish Pond Accessories
When the fish pond has been built and populated with fish and aquatic plants, it is time to think about fish
pond accessories. Depending on what you consider to be a basic layout, one of the first fish pond accessories to
consider is a fountain. There are other tools too including spot lights and concealed up or down lighting. If the
pond is near where you sit, you may also consider a bug trap or mosquito zapper.
Fish Pond Accessories
Once your fishpond is set up and your fish are happily swimming about, you may think that the spending is over.
Of course, it could be if that is what you want, but there are plenty of fish pond accessories & decorations
that would set your fishpond off a treat.
Static pond plants and floating lilies are not accessories, but you ought to get them in order to help with the
aeration of your fishpond water.
Water aeration is a very important consideration for the health of fish, so it is a good idea to concentrate on
fish pond accessories & decorations that promote water oxygenation. The first of the fish pond accessories that
you must have is a water fountain.
You will probably need a second pump to run the fountain, but it is well worth it. The pump will need to have
filters to stop the jets from clogging. They will have a range of pumps and filters at your pond & garden
supplies store.
Fountains come in various types. You can buy a complete fountain, one with variable pattern nozzles or a
fountain kit. This kind of pond equipment can be cheap or expensive and the variable fountain patterns are fun to
experiment with. Consider a second fishpond pump for great fountain displays.
The second of the fish pond accessories that will help aeration is a water garden aerator or 'bubbler'. This is
one of those features that you see throwing up bubbles from the bottom of the fishpond.
These are really useful fish pond accessories because they oxygenate the water from the deepest level up and are
easy to install. A water garden aerator will provide a major contribution to the oxygen levels in your pond
water
In the winter, aeration is a major problem, especially if you live where water freezes over. If you pond freezes
over, noxious gases will not be able to escape and oxygen will not be able to get in. The answer is one of the best
winter time fish pond accessories on the market - the floating pond water de-icer. They are also very easy to
install.
They use low voltage or even solar power to produce just enough heat to stop water from icing over for a circle
of a foot or so in diameter. That is enough in an average garden pond to be a life saver for your fish, especially
if you are away a lot or go on holiday.
The next great fish pond accessories are fishpond lights. You can really set your fishpond off with coloured
up-lights, down-lights and spot lights. Ultra-violet lights look spectacular when the fountain is running too.
A sturdy canvas bag or case is a useful accessory, especially if your water feature is not near the shed or
garage. A waterproof bag is useful for carrying your fishpond supplies, plants and gear back and fore.
A fishpond cover is useful for preventing flooding if it rains a lot and it will help protect against freezing
too. Another useful accessory is a wet and dry outdoor garden vac for hoovering up leaves from the water and the
surrounding garden.
A lot of these pond accessories can be solar powered, which my cost a little more to buy, but will obviously
cost nothing to run. The solar units can charge batteries for night use so you can use your fish pond accessories
to your heart's content with no strain on your wallet.
